A Manatū Taonga audio guide to Lake Grassmere and its salt industry. Check out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's audio guide in the image carousel above.

Pink-tinged crystallisation ponds at Lake Grassmere produce up to 70,000 tonnes of salt from sea water each year -- about half of New Zealand's salt needs. Salt was first produced at the lake in the 1940s.
